Virus Removal

Your computer may have been pre-installed with anti-virus software, but it will offer very little protection unless you purchase a subscription to keep it updated.

If your computer is infected with viruses I will scan your computer and remove them, and install an up-to-date anti-virus software to keep you protected.

Spyware and malware removed

Spyware/malware software is the number one threat to your computer. Broadly it is software you wouldn't want on your computer if you knew what it did. Often it is installed alongside software you do want, but also they are beginning to infect computers just like viruses.

In practice, spyware/malware does the following:

• It slows your PC down to a crawl
• Displays annoying pop-ups
• Reveal to others your passwords and credit card numbers
• Track your browsing habits
• Use your computer to send Spam messages to others.

One of the first steps I do for you is disable potential spyware and run a full spyware scan of your computer, to remove unwanted software. Your computer will be faster and much more secure.

Scan your computer for spyware monthly and whenever your computer acts strangely.

firewall configuration

Your firewall is your first and best defense against viruses and spyware, and should be regularly updated. A firewall restricts communication to and from the internet, and needs to be occasionally reviewed to ensure that the restrictions are not so low that the firewall isn't protecting you, but is allowing all your games/software to work correctly.

I will review your firewall settings, ensuring that your computer remains protected. If your computer doesn't have a firewall installed I will install one for you.

Always have a firewall installed on your computer before you connect to the internet.

windows updates

I will install the latest service packs and security patches for your computer from CD-ROM. This is ideal if you are currently using dial-up or are considering getting broadband (phone me for free advice on which broadband provider to use).

It is important that your computer has all the latest service packs and security patches installed before it is connected to the internet, to prevent viruses and malware from getting onto your computer.

Computer configuration

E-mail and Spam

If you use Outlook for e-mail, I will update your software to the latest secure version from Microsoft, and install suitable Spam protection software.

Web Browsing

For most people your web browser is your main way of communicating with the internet, and therefore the main target for internet based viruses and malware.

I clear down unwanted toolbars and browser based software, and repair your internet settings to ensure you can browse the web securely. I will apply the latest patches for internet explorer.

Why not try the award-winning Firefox web browser to browse the internet. It protects you from viruses, spyware and pop-ups, and has easier to use features like tabbed browsing and integrated google search.

Windows passwords and other settings

If you are locked out of your own computer, or have lost passwords for websites or software that you use, give me a call.

For password resetting, I will need proof of ownership of the computer.
